Woody Allen in “Manhattan” dictating an idea for a short story about “people in Manhattan who are constantly creating unnecessary, neurotic problems for themselves because it keeps them from dealing with more unsolvable, terrifying problems about the universe.” Distraction. Essentially he’s referring to distraction. Reminds me of this well-crafted exchange in HurlyBurly.
As this Big Ideas page continues to develop, (and it will – I have SO much to write about I may have to quit my job), I am certain that these following topics will be thoroughly discussed. There will be others, but these are the ones that are on my mind the most.
- Self control. Master of your domain. Controlling urges and how life tests us for this trait.
- The necessity to make investments before and as a prerequisite to getting positive results.
- Understanding the situation before spouting off.
- Things work in spirals and exponential relationships.
- The necessary role of challenge or conflict or contest in romantic partner selection. usually without our conscious awareness that we are engaging in it—either as the test giver or test taker.
- How our go-to feel good impulse is to consume. We’ll get the bump, but for long term fulfilment, the trick is to do, not to consume.
