Column-licious

[col-sect][column]A major leap forward in 1/7th design went down this evening: I’ve been wanting to incorporate narrower, magazine-style columns in each post for over a year and in the last few hours I have FINALLY pulled it off… thanks to a plugin called WP-columnize. Yes, I’m very happy. I did a bit of experimenting with the column and gutter widths before settling on what you’re seeing now; both the column and gutter are proportionally wider than you’d see in a magazie, but without the same need to economixe for space online, this feels more natural. I’ve also taken the step to justify to full column width, which I previously been reluctant to do, as it didn’t seem professional somehow. But hey, The New Yorker Magazine does it, and they’re not suffering from a lack of professionalism. Mind you, their website does not justify full width. Hmf. For the time-being I’m happy with the way it reads, and of course… cleaner edges

The columns are created manually by adding tags within the text, which means yes, if I wanted to update the entire site, I’d have to go in and edit each post separately and trial and error the tag locations until I was satisfied. [/column][column]Well that would take about 6 months. And is not going to happen. What I have done though is edited to columnize the last 10 or so posts so that the front page will appear consistent. However, if you go to page 2 etc, you still get posts in a single column – a column that’s way too wide. But hey you know, you have to look forward.

The site is now wider to accommodate the additional column, and I will do some redesign work to narrow it again. Probably have to undo some of the recent changes. But that’s ok; this columnization is more important for me. At least today. But if the site is not behaving or not fitting on your monitor, just hang tight, I’ll be making minor adjustments in coming days. [/column][/col-sect]
